Liquid beat fnatic to win IEM Sydney 2019
First trophy towards the Intel Grand Slam for Team Liquid.
Liquid beat fnatic in 3-2 to win the 2019 edition of IEM Sydney in a keenly-contested best-of-five series, taking their second international title of the year in front of a rowdy Aussie crowd.
During the map veto, fnatic picked Cache and Mirage, while Liquid chose Overpass and Dust 2. Inferno was left over, with Nuke and Train being banned in the best-of-five series.
At the first map of the best-of-five series, Cache, Liquid and fnatic appeared to be in a classic knock-out brawl with the Swedes answering every round with one of their own - giving themselves a 1-0 map lead.
But the North American squad showed resilience to answer with a 16-14 win on Overpass and a 16-8 victory on Mirage. However, the Swedes responded with a dominant 16-6 win on Dust 2, to force the series to its last map. Yet, Liquid held their nerve to strung out a 16-9 win on Inferno, picking up the IEM Sydney trophy and securing the $100,000 top prize.
